Last week, Eric and I went around campus to find out what UofT peeps are hungry for. I think we’re hungry for a lot of things. Sushi, fried chicken, pasta. Thinking about food always makes me hungry 🤤
When Jesus says in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied,” he’s using a picture that’s extremely familiar to us. We eat and drink every day and without doing so, we’d be dead.
This righteousness that Jesus is referring to is God himself, the source of righteousness, and the things of God. This makes me wonder then what is my appetite like for God. Sometimes I find myself being excited for God, but then other times I find myself stuffed with other things and distracted.
The reminder I got from the recent study really is that we need to take care not to ruin our appetite for God. If we’re consuming a lot of other things that are not spiritually beneficial, we will end up losing our appetite for the things of God. And that would indeed get us sick.
On the other hand, I find that when we follow God, there are a lot of exciting things to look forward to also. Perhaps when we are a baby, we don’t really see all the kinds of foods and flavors in the world. But as we mature spiritually, we get to taste and see more and more of the things God wants us to experience.
And if we take action based on our hunger and thirst for God, we will indeed be satisfied.
