What to do when someone slaps you? At the very least slap back right??
Controversially, in Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus says NO! give them your other cheek to slap also instead. What?? 😠
I’ve never been slapped before, but I can say for sure that I’ve been hurt by other people. People can do things to you that really feel like a slap in the face. You pour out your heart to someone only to be tossed aside like trash. You open up to someone only to be ridiculed and made fun of. You make sacrifices for someone only to be criticized for not sacrificing enough.
When I get hurt, my instinctive response is bite back. You hurt me, I hurt you! And at the same time, I’m gonna protect myself from ever getting hurt again.
But Jesus wants to show us that there is a better way to live. The world will never become a better place as long as we are constantly retaliating and trying to avoid getting hurt. Good only comes about when we are no longer afraid of being hurt again.
But how to be such a person? 🥴
