What is your idea of glory? Is it being rich and famous? Being someone with power and having many servants?
In Mark 10:32-45, two of Jesus’s disciples, James and John, approached and asked him to grant them to sit on his left and right side in his glory. They were seeking to share in the glory of Jesus, thinking that Jesus was going to lead them to change and rule the world.
However, Jesus explained to them that his glory is not the type of glory that they were thinking. Unlike the glory of this world where being served is a symbol of prestige, the concept of glory that Jesus has in mind is opposite to the world’s. Jesus teaches that whoever wants to become great must become a servant, and whoever wants to be first in the kingdom of God must be servant of all.
This is the glory that anyone who follows Jesus should seek as well. It is not easy as it requires denying and sacrificing oneself. May God continue to reveal and renew our thinking so that we can see the value of being a servant.
