👂 Healing of the Deaf Man (Mark 7:31-37)

Is your hearing good? Or do you sometimes hear without actually hearing?

Last week in Mark 7:31-37, Jesus healed a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking. Jesus used an unexpected way to heal this man as he pulled the man aside from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears, and touched the man’s tongue with saliva. Then at Jesus’s command, “Be opened!”, the man was healed, his ears opened, and the man began speaking plainly.

There are no set formulas or methods of how God works. Sometimes, the way he works may not be what we expect and the teachings from God may not be pleasant to our ears. When these happen, do we still hold on to God, or do we instead back off and try to find other ways ourselves?

Jesus was concerned not only with the healing of people’s physical condition, but even more so with the healing of people’s spiritual condition. Jesus came to preach the word of God, but a lot of people stopped at only wanting the physical healing, not opening their spiritual ears to hear the gospel that could save their spiritual lives.

We must take heed of what we are listening to, and how we are listening. For Jesus said, “He who has ears, let him hear!”
