How would you react if you suspected that your partner had cheated on you?
Joseph found out that his betrothed, Mary, had become pregnant while she was still a virgin (Matthew 1:18-25). Obviously Joseph must have thought that she was being unfaithful. But out of concern for her, he decided to send her away secretly since he did not want to disgrace her publicly. He was a righteous man but at the same time very compassionate.
And when Joseph was visited by an angel in a dream, he remembered God’s prophecies, and waking up, he followed the angel’s instructions. Joseph was a faithful man towards God, and his familiarity with Scripture allowed him to know God’s plan.
The angel told Joseph to name the baby Jesus, because through Jesus, God was going to save people from sin to be reconciled with Him. This is God’s plan, to save us.
We see that Jesus was born to faithful and godly parents and that God has a big role for him.
