Would you be able to survive without salt?
Last week, we looked at Matthew 5:13, where Jesus said:
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.”
Jesus was speaking to his disciples and those who desire to follow him, reminding them that they have a responsibility to be the “salt of the earth”—and warning them not to lose their “saltiness”. What does this mean?
Through our study, we saw that salt has several functions. It can purify, bring out flavor, and preserve. In the Bible, salt can also be connected to the wisdom of God. So, when salt loses its saltiness, it can also point to a loss of spiritual wisdom—becoming foolish or drifting away from God’s ways.
One thing that stood out to me is that salt only fulfills its purpose when it dissolves. In the same way, as disciples of Christ, we are called to lay down ourselves for others. If we are unwilling to do that, then we may still “look like” salt outwardly but not actually function as salt—and that’s not what God intends for us.
So just like the salt you add to your food—may our lives truly bring out “flavor”, making a real difference in the lives of those around us.
